Nestled just 18 kilometers (11 miles) from Porto Santo Stefano on the picturesque Argentario peninsula in Tuscany, Giglio offers a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle. Conveniently reachable within 1.5 hours from Rome’s airport, Porto Santo Stefano serves as the gateway to Giglio, Elba, Capraia, and other gems of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. With its rugged coastline stretching 27 kilometers (about 17 miles) and dotted with hidden beaches, and its enchanting interior adorned with resilient Mediterranean flora, including oleander and prickly pear cactus, Giglio promises an escape like no other.

Day 1

We begin our day by collecting you from Rome Fiumicino airport at 11.30am and beginning our drive to Tuscany port where we will catch the ferry to the island of Giglio. On the ferry there will be opportunity to get to know all the other runners and swimmers whilst enjoying a fresh panino and a glass of prosecco. Once we arrive on the island, you have a choice to begin your adventure right away by running 5km back to the villa whilst your luggage is dropped off for you, or taking a more leisurely approach by being driven to the villa to relax after your journey.
At 6pm we will enjoy a short and refreshing dip in the cove, then be transported out to dinner on the island at 7.30pm.

Day 2

After a relaxed and light breakfast at the villa, you can choose to join the first trail run of the adventure with Jorn and his group, covering a multitude of terrain around the coastline and covering 5-8km with some steep inclines, or you can choose to begin your swimming adventure by exploring some coves which are only accessible via the water! We will stop occassionally to enjoy the sealife and the panorama and will enjoy a slow and relaxed pace to cover 3km.
We we then enjoy lunch with the whole group (or a car will take you back to the villa if choosing self catering) and after which we will enjoy a hike to another beach and swim our way back to the villa (1.5km – 2.km).
Dinner will be at a local restaurant from 7.30pm.

Day 3

After a relaxing and light breakfast, again you have a choice to enjoy running or swimming. The running group will cover approx 20km with 1000m+ of climbing. You will need to bring your own bladder backpack to ensure you keep hydrated!
The swimming group will enjoy a hike of approx 3-5km to a beautiful cove and begin our swim to a nearby beach (approx 3km) where we will meet the runners and enjoy a group BBQ and gentle splash about/snorkelling. After lunch you can decide to swim 2km back to Casa Smeralda, or be driven back to the villa for a rest and recuperation.

The evening will be spent enjoying local wines and sea food along with a relaxing walk to enjoy the castle and historic ruins.

Day 4

Breakfast will be served a little earlier today at 7.45am.
After breakfast you can choose to enjoy a relaxed trail run up to 7.5km with 450m+ climbing from Campese to Cannelle, or a slow and leisurely swim from Casa Smeralda to Cannelle (approx 3km).
We will stop for a quick espresso and sweet treet before either hiking, running or swimming 2km back to the port before we make our journey back on the ferry. Your luggage will be brought from the villa to the port for you, so be sure to pack before you leave for your activity.
On the ferry we will once again enjoy a panino and prosecco to toast the end of the trip, then begin the drive back to Rome Fiumicino airport.

Optional day before or after the trip

Should you wish to extend your trip you can do so!
There will be some runners arriving in Rome on Wednesday 17th April and organsing a fun and casual run around some of Rome’s best loved sights – the Coloseum and Vatican City in the evening! There is no charge to enjoy this group run, but you will need to organise your own accommodation and dining for the evening. You will also need to ensure you are at Rome Fiumicino Airport for 11.30am on Thursday 18th April to ensure your cordinated transfer to the island of Giglio.
Rome city centre is very easily accessible from the airport with direct train links within the airport costing just 8 Eur return and takes approx 40 minutes. There is plenty of accommodation for every budget. We can certainly recommend booking the twilight tour of the Coloseum, it’s truly magical!
